The summer is mainly
cool and of changing weather, the winter is not too freezing, rather mild, and
similar to that of Polish seaside.
The
microclimate of Szczawno is conditioned by the location in the valley of the
Szczawnik creek and surrounding forests. There are only few towns in Poland with such richness of parks or other green areas within its borders constituting
over 170 ha of Szczawno.
History
Szczawno
Zdroj was first mentioned in historic sources in 1221. Initially it belonged to
Wroclaw Principality and in 1509 was taken over by the Hochberg
family.
The water springs in
Szczawno belong to the oldest in Europe just as the springs in Switzerland. Archeological research proves that the mineral waters were known about 2000
years ago. But the first medical analysis was made in 1598 by Casper Schwenckfeldt
– the physician of the Hochberg family. In 1815 the first sanatorium was built
and that was the beginning of the Spa development.
The local curative mineral water
springs, examined and described as early as 1601, were the beginning of spa
treatment activities, and the foundation of the first sanatorium facilities. In
1816, Szczawno was officially recognised as a health resort. The curative
waters, mild in flavour, are mainly bicarbonate-sodium-calcium-magnesium
oxalates, known under the names of "Mieszko", "Dabrowka",
"Mlynarz" and "Marta".
