IX Congress for the learning and teaching of Mathematics (JAEM)

The Spanish Federation of Societies of Mathematics Teachers organizes the IX Congress for the learning and teaching of Mathematics (JAEM) that this year will be organized by ENCIGA. This is a Galician Association of more than eight hundred teachers of Experimental Sciences and Mathematics. The IX JAEM will be held in Lugo (Galicia) on the 9th, 10th and 11th of September, 1999.
The Jaem are hold every two years in a different city of Spain so that all societies can organize them. The activities of Jaem include:
- Communications about ten different topics:
A Tecnologies in the Teaching of Mathematics. Graphic Calculators and computers.
B The teaching of statistics: a challenge pending.
C Workshops and other options in Mathematics.
D Mathematics in real life and their connection with other subjects in school.
E From aritmethics thinking to algebraic thinking.
F Basis of the learning of mathematics in Primary Teaching.
G The Teaching of Mathematics at the University.
H Teacher Training in Mathematics.
I Having fun with Maths.
J Mathematics in the Secundary School.
- Workshops,
- Competitions of photography and educational software,
- Mathematics exhibitions.
- Trips and excursions to different places in Galicia.

INFORMATION ABOUT GALICIA.
Galicia is a country in the northwest of Spain with its own language (galego) that used to be the same language as the portuguese a long time ago. Santiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia, and the next year will be Compostela Holy Year and because of this, hundred of thousand of pilgrims will walk to Santiago de Compostela along the Pilgrimīs way in the last Jubilee Year or Holy Year of the milenium.
On the way to Santiago, Lugo city has the best preserved roman wall in the world. Galicia has a lot of places of interest :
Rias Baixas (with beautiful beaches, estuaries and mountains),
The Dead cost with some of the most breathtaking cliffs,
Santiago city (European Culture city in the 2000) and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Santiago way, a lot of celtic traditions (music and celebrations) and a wonderful countryside.
